My favorite albums of 2008

This is a list of my favorite albums of 2008, the ones I go back to again and again. I'm limiting it to 12 so I don't end up missing sleep growing this list, finding myself at the beginning of 2009 before it's posted.

Lil Wayne
Tha Carter III

"Bitch, [he's] the bomb like tick tick"

I just thoroughly enjoy this album, over and over again. Lil Wayne's auto-tune croaky voice, killer beats, and original rhymes don't get old even though I have this album on repeat. It's like a guilty pleasure that just happens to be innovative and intelligent even though it's really friggin fun. If you've been resisting buying this album because it's overhyped, just give in and get it!

Highlights:
*3Peat
"Yeah, I got game like Stuart Scott
Fresh out the ESPN shop
And when Sports Center popping, everything stopping
But you can't fool me I know what you watching

Me! You watch me
You watch me 'cause I be
Weezy, must see TV
C3!"

*Mr. Carter feat. Jay-Z
*A Milli
*Got Money
*Comfortable feat. Babyface

Babyface reminds us with his sublime voice "If you don't love me, somebody else will." Lessons for life from Weezy!

*Tie My Hands feat. Robin Thicke
"I knock on the door, hope isn't home
Fate's not around, the luck's all gone
Don't ask me what's wrong, ask me what's right
And I'ma tell you what's life"

Shoot Me Down
This song has a dark melody and D. Smith's haunting harmonies in the chorus
"Drum sound like a naked gun, I switch clips with my thumb
Then I pop another clip in and aim at his vision
'Cause Wayne is his vision, 'cause Wayne is the mission
I'm aimin' at a mirror"

*Dontgetit - sampling Nina Simone's "Misunderstood" - with some pretty great insights about Al Sharpton and discrepancies in American justice. Just listen to the whole dope-fueled rant.
"I was watchin' T.V. the other day, right
Got this white guy up there talkin' about black guys
Talkin' about how young black guys are targeted
Targeted by who? America.

You see 1 in every 100 Americans are locked up
1 in every 9 black Americans are locked up
And see what the white guy was tryin' to stress was that
The money we spend on sendin' a mothafucka to jail

A young mothafucka to jail
Would be less to send his or her young ass to college"

Matthew Ryan
Matthew Ryan Vs. The Silver State

Matthew Ryan is a singer-songwriter from Pennsylvania who also put out an album as part of Strays Don't Sleep in 2007 (music I also like a lot but sometimes find a little saccharine). His voice is raspy and fragile and his lyrics are poetry, reminiscent of Springsteen at his most mellow.

Highlights:
*American Dirt
"Honey, I swear it's not my fault
They shut us down, the big door was locked.
The bigger the dream, the bigger the trap
The bigger the black in disappointment.

I crossed my fingers 'til they were broke
I threw a brick the arc formed so slow
And on the TV outside the mall
In my defense...

I move through days like I were a knife
My eyes were blue, now they're bruises
A silver cross on tan wet skin
I'm thirsty thinking I should climb in
...Heaven knows, I'm by a thread"

*It Could've Been Worse
"Her blonde hair was a setting sun
Her mascara was born to run
You got scared when she started to show
One more thing you'd have to let go

So you stood on that bridge
Overlooking old crappy town
Snow was falling slowly all around
You smoked a quick cigarette
But I'll never believe
That you jumped and just ended there
The note you left read 'Look everywhere
You'll never bury me.'"

*Jane, I Still Feel the Same - a gorgeous song about loss
"All the cars on the boulevard
I watch their taillights disappear
And all the days that I've been sleeping through
Awake to remind me that you're still not here
And you'll never be again.

You were a good thing
You were a good thing
In a world gone wrong"

*I Only Want To Be the Man You Want
"I only want to be the man you want
The ring you twist, the song you hum
I only want to be the man you want

...You wave goodbye beside the things you think will get you by
You should land now, hummingbird
Maybe you should land now, hummingbird"

*Closing In
"You put your hand in mine
As the plane took off
You said 'you don't know how lucky you are'
Now I know I was

Maybe I'll go for a walk
Maybe I'll go to Hell
Maybe it's just that we're the only ones that save us from ourselves"

*Meet Me By the River - this song brings me to tears every time
"Anchors away
I promised I'd stay
Against my every instinct
I'm in the black 'til the day sinks

I woke up down, down to that dirty part inside me, down
I just want to stay clean.. clean
You don't know what that means
You don't want to know

Meet me by the river
I'm sorry MaryJane
I thought that things could be different
What else can I say?

But I recall...
Watching you walk down the aisle
And I recall the way your flower girls made your mother smile
We used to smile"

Frightened Rabbit
Midnight Organ Fight

This Scottish trio, whose songs I've posted on my blog earlier this month, are a bass-free indie rock band who manage not to sound like every other bass-free indie rock band. It doesn't hurt that they have a kick-ass drummer and above par songwriting.

Highlights:
*The Modern Leper - the most poppy track on the album with a chorus that worms its way into your brain
"Is that you in front of me?
Coming back for even more of exactly the same?
You must be a masochist
To love a modern leper on his last leg"

*I Feel Better
*Good Arms vs. Bad Arms
"I decided this decision some six months ago
So I'll stick to my guns but from now on, it's war
I'm armed with the past and the will, and a brick
I might not want you back but I want to kill him

And leave the rest at arm's length
Keep your naked flesh under your favorite dress
And leave the rest at arm's length
When they reach out, don't touch them
Don't touch them"

*Fast Blood
*Old Old Fashioned

*The Twist

"You twist and whisper the wrong name
I don't care nor do my ears
Twist yourself around me
I need company, I need human heat
I need human heat

Let's pretend I'm attractive and then
You won't mind, you can twist for a while
It's the night, I can be who you like
And I'll quietly leave before it gets light"

*Head Rolls Off
"When it's all gone, something carries on
And it's not morbid at all
Just when nature's had enough of you
When my blood stops, someone else's will not
When my head rolls off, someone else's will turn
And while I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to earth"

*Backwards Walk
"I'm working on my faults and cracks
Filling in the blanks and gaps
And when I write them out they don't make sense
I need you to pencil in the rest

I'm working on drawing a straight line
And I'll draw until I get one right
It's bold and dark, girl, can't you see?
I done drawn a line between you and me"

*Keep Yourself Warm
"Can you see in the dark?
Can you see the look on your face?
The flashing white light's been turned off
You don't know who's in your bed

Oh, you won't find love in a
Won't find love in a hole
It takes more than fucking someone
To keep yourself warm"

*Floating In the Forth
"And the door shut, shut
I was vacuum packed
Shrink wrapped out of air
And the spine collapsed
And the eyes rolled back
To stare at my starving brain

And fully clothed, I float away
(I'll float away)
Down the forth, into the sea
I think I'll save suicide for another day"

Bon Iver
For Emma, Forever Ago

Debut album from Justin Vernon. Simple and beautiful acoustic guitar-based songs.

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals

Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) puts together such unlikely mash-ups as Biggie/Elton John, Lil Wayne/Metallica, and Jay-Z/Radiohead. There's even some Kelly Clarkson and Chicago sampled in there. Pure, unapologetic, smart, booty-shaking fun.

Alejandro Escovedo
Real Animal

One of his best, a nice marriage of his punk, rock-n-roll, and rootsy history.

Why?
Alopecia

A trio of Midwestern (Jewish?) white guys creates indie lo-fi unclassifiable hip-hop fabulousness.

The Spinto Band
Moonwink

Catchy, perky indie pop with multi-part vocal harmonies and exuberant instrumentation

Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles

Synthy and unpredictable (as well as undefinable) with tweaked vocals and drum machines.

Cut Copy
In Ghost Colours

Electro/dance pop with some healthy, updated 80's nostalgia.

The Rural Alberta Advantage
Hometowns

Indie-rock folk songs in the vein of Neutral Milk Hotel with a rootsy thread running through.

Deerhunter
Microcastle

Ambient, experimental post-punk? I was a little late getting on the Deerhunter train, but I dig it.

Melancholic Mix

I put this mix together as a soundtrack for nights like this (in Austin, anyway)... foggy and slightly melancholic. Good for sitting around a fire with friends, as I have the pleasure of doing tonight, or sitting at home with a glass of wine... mellow and towing the line between sadness and joy. I think it might become one of my favorites.

3. Turn Around - Whiskeytown
4. It Is Safe - Matt Pond PA

7. Rumors - Josh Ritter
8. Sorry - Youth Group
9. Those Girls - Ryan Adams
10. Market Girl - Headlights
11. Two Kinds - Film School
12. Show Me The River - eastmountainsouth
13. Spirit Fingers - Strays Don't Sleep
14. On and On and On - Wilco
15. So Much Trouble - Matt Pond PA
16. You Are Free - Joseph Arthur

The Soldier Thread, Johnny Goudie & The Little Champions, Alpha Rev show - with pics

I went to Antone's last Friday to see the Sea Change Records showcase with Johnny Goudie & The Little Champions and Alpha Rev, whose performances were really strong as usual, but ended up being pleasantly surprised by the openers, The Soldier Thread, also on the Sea Change label.

They're an Austin-based quintet with Patricia Lynn on viola and vocals - her voice is ethereal and amazing and the harmonies were awesome. The band is rounded out with Todd Abels (guitar, vox), Chance Gilmore (bass), Justin McHugh (rhodes, guitars, vox), and Drew Van Diver (drums).

Their next show is at Antone's on New Year's Eve opening for Bob Schneider with The Black & White Years. What an incredible lineup! Then, they're at Stubb's on January 9th with Homer Hiccolm & The Rocketboys.

Free track from Burial

If you missed this album last year, check out this track and seriously consider going to your nearest record store and purchasing it. I thought it was one of the best albums of 2007.

Here's a description from the album notes that I think describes it pretty perfectly: "Burial returns with ‘Untrue’, a new record of weird soul music, which lovingly processes spectral female voices into vaporised R&B and smudged 2step garage. Vocal lines are blurred, smeared, pitched up pitched down and pitch bent until their content is cast adrift from their original context and they whisper their saccharin sweet nothings into the void. The album continues with the debut’s crackle-drenched yearning and bustling syncopations, haunted by the ghosts of rave, but also reveals some new Burial treats with a more glowing, upbeat energy."

Enjoy the freebie.. then go buy it!

Free tracks from Deltron 3030

Here are some free tracks from Deltron 3030, a concept album collaboration between Del the Funky Homosapien & producer Dan the Automator. It was re-released in September, and although the album came out in 2000 (and I've been enjoying it for years!), it's never been available digitally before.

Enjoy!

My favorite lyrics of all time. Right now.

I'm a whore for words. Lyrics are such a huge piece of a song for me, and great songs are poetry. Granted, I can enjoy some music purely meant to make you want to move (i.e. Crystal Castles, Cut Copy, Lil Wayne, Kanye), but if a song has a kick-ass lyric, it means so much more. I could go on about this for days (especially if I went down the Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Patty Griffin road) but this is a blog, not an epic, so I won't.

Here's a sampling of some of my favorites.

This whole song is filled with great ones, but this is the most poignant for me -
"She comes back to tell me she's gone/ As if I didn't know that, as if I didn't know my own bed/ As if I'd never noticed the way she brushed her hair from her forehead/ And she says losing love is like a window in your heart/ Everybody sees you're blown apart/ Everybody feels the wind blow"
- Paul Simon, Graceland

One of my all-time favorite songs, beautiful in its simplicity:
"If you should ever leave me/ Though life would still go on, believe me/ The world could show nothing to me/ So what good would living do me?/ God only knows what I'd be without you..." - The Beach Boys, God Only Knows

Almost a no-brainer:
"You might be a rock n' roll addict prancing on the stage/ You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage/ You may be a business man or some high degree thief/ They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief/ But you're gonna have to to serve somebody/ It may be the devil, or it may be the Lord/ But you're gonna have to serve somebody"
- Bob Dylan, Gotta Serve Somebody

This song does it for me every time:
"He tried hard to help me, you know he put me at ease/ And he loved me so naughty, made me weak in the knees/ Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on.../ I'm so hard to handle, I'm selfish and I'm sad/ Now I've gone and lost the best baby that I ever had/ Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on/ I wish I had a river so long, I would teach my feet to fly.../ I wish I had a river I could skate away on/ I made my baby say goodbye"
- Joni Mitchell, River

One of the most underrated, heart-breaking songs ever:
"...Basically, I wish that you loved me.../ I wish that you needed me. I wish that you knew when I said two sugars, actually I meant three / I wish that without me, your heart would break / I wish that without me, you'd be spending the rest of your nights awake/ I wish that without me, you couldn't eat. I wish I was the last thing on your mind before you went to sleep/ Look, all I know is that you're the nicest thing...I've ever seen/ And I wish we could see if we could be something..."
- Kate Nash, Nicest Thing

My love for this song (and artist) has lasted from high school and continues.
"I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets/ Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets/ I've been raising up my hands, drive another nail in/ Got enough guilt to start my own religion/ Why do we crucify ourselves, everyday?/ I crucify myself, and nothing I do is good enough for you/ I crucify myself, everyday, I crucify myself/ My heart is sick of being in chains..."
"...he says, will you ever learn? You're just an empty cage, girl, if you kill the bird..."
- Tori Amos, Crucify

"Yellow bird flying, gets shot in the wing/ Good year for hunters.. and Christmas parties/ And I hate, and I hate, and I hate/ Elevator music... the way we fight/ The way I'm left here... silent/ Oh, these little earthquakes.. Here we go again/ Oh, these little earthquakes/ Doesn't take much to rip us into pieces."
- Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes

Darkly gorgeous:
"He said you're really an ugly girl, But I like the way you play/ And I died, but I thanked him/ Can you believe that?/ Sick, sick, holding onto his picture, dressing up every day/ I want to smash the faces of those beautiful boys, those Christian boys/ So you can make me come/ That doesn't make you Jesus/ ...I remember, yes, in my peach party dress/ No one dared, no one cared to tell me/ Where the pretty girls are/ Those demigods, with their nine inch nails, little facist panties tucked inside the heart of every nice girl/ These precious things, let them bleed/ Let them wash away/ These precious things/ Let them break their hold on me"
- Tori Amos, Precious Things

Again, this whole song is poetry but a highlight:
"So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts/ What's so amazing about really deep thoughts?/ Boy, you best pray that I bleed real soon, how's that thought for you?/ My scream got lost in a paper cup/ I think there's a heaven where some screams have gone/ I got twenty-five bucks and a cracker/ Do you think it's enough to get us there?"
"... Years go by, will I still be waiting for somebody else to understand?/ Years go by, if I'm stripped of my beauty and the orange clouds raining in my head?/ Years go by, will I choke on my tears till finally there is nothing left?/ One more tragedy, you know we're too easy, easy, easy..."
Tori Amos, Silent All These Years

"I heard your wrist got bruised/ Must've felt just like old times/ I wish you would have grabbed the gun/ And shot me 'cause I died/ And I'm nothing now without you, Yeah I'm less than nothing now/ I am the one between the bars and lost forever now/ 'Cause honey, it's over/ It's harder now that it's over/ Now that the cuffs are off/ It's over now/ It's harder now that it's over/ Now that the cuffs are off/ You're free.. you're free... you're free/ Free with a history"
- Ryan Adams, Harder Now That It's Over

"Can I love a man the way I love a mountain?/ Can I love a man the way I love the sea?/ I let the beauty of a sunset break my heart a thousand times and I keep coming back to feel it beat/
...I've read about the raven and how it mates for life/ When one passes on, it isn't long before you hear its fading cry/ I have loved like that before but I did not die of grief/ I learned the more I open up my heart, the more it's gonna bleed/ But it's a good thing my friend"
- Molly Venter, Can I Love A Man The Way I Love A Mountain

"I picked you out of the crowd and talked to you/ Said I liked your shoes, you said thanks can I follow you?/ So it's up the stairs and out of view, no prying eyes/ I poured some wine, I asked your name you asked the time/ Now it's 2:00, the club is closed, we're up the block/ Your hands on me, pressing hard against my jeans/ Trying to keep the words from coming out/ You didn't care to know, who else may have been you before/
I want a lover I don't have to love/ I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck/ ...Hey, where's the kid with the chemicals? I got a hunger and I can't seem to get full/ I need some meaning I can memorize, the kind I have always seems to slip my mind/ You write such pretty words, but life's no storybook/ Love's an excuse to get hurt.. and to hurt/ Do you like to hurt? I do, I do! Then hurt me, then hurt me..."
- Bright Eyes, Lover I Don't Have To Love

"This is the moment, that you know/ That you told her that you loved her but you don't/ You touch her skin and then you think/ She is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me... I wanted to believe it, all the words that I was speaking as we moved together in the dark/ And all the friends that I was telling/ All the graceful misspellings, every bite I gave that left a mark/ And tiny vessels oozed into the neck and formed the bruises that you said you didn't want to fade/ But they did, and so did I that day"
- Death Cab For Cutie, Tiny Vessels

"It's funny how a morning turns a love to shame/ Disguised and disfigured and you thought I tasted like rain/ There's nothing here but a shadow, nothing here/ Now you know, now you know, now you know, now you know/ There's nothing here but the shadow and I know... I can chew like a cannibal/ I can yell like a cat/ I even had you believing that I really really like it like that/ But there was never a moment/ Not a moment/ Now you know, now you know, now you know, now you know/ You ever got within a hundred million miles of my soul...You left open the window till the morning/ And the winter walked in/ Reality fired her wooden bullet/ Splintered under our skin/ They say I'm walking on freedom/ This is freedom/ Now I know, now I know, now I know, now I know/ I still don't blame you for leaving, baby/ It's cold living with ghosts"
- Patty Griffin, Every Little Bit

Favorite rap lyrics for another day! Namaste.

Preview tracks from Blue Giant

Enjoy some preview tracks from Blue Giant's debut release, set to hit stores on January 20th.

Blue Giant is Kevin and Anita Robinson also known as Viva Voce and this is their latest project out of Portland. Evan Railton (drums), Seth Lorinczi (bass/organ), and Chris Funk (multi-instrumentalist) round out the band, which sounds more rootsy and less psychedelic than their Viva Voce music.

Girl Guitar Presents Terri Hendrix Live at Momo's

Last night, Mandy Rowden of Girl Guitar put together an amazing show and info session for women singer/songwriters and wannabes.

Terri Hendrix performed several of her best songs, including "The Spiritual Kind", "If I Had A Daughter" (which brought a lot of tears from the estrogen and creativity-filled audience), "Goodtime Van", "No Love In Texas", "Walk On Me", and "Wallet"- her first time performing alone, sans Lloyd Maines, in 10 years! She shared stories with us about how she wrote some of the songs and her personal advice on pursuing a career in music (predictably, it involved a lot of "don't give up", but was truly inspiring). Something about her energy is so contagious. Check out this video of Terri singing "Places In Between" (courtesy of Karen Chisolm).

Mandy Rowden opened the show with Paul Mancusso (sp?) sitting in on multiple instruments, Tanya Winch was interviewed by Terri and sang her (awesome) song, "He's Getting Ready" - a guess on the title of that one, since I don't think it's on any of her albums yet. Kim Miller also made an appearance with a really pretty song called "Soy Tu Sirena".

Vickie Lucero of Propaganda Media Group gave us some tips on choosing a publicist and deciding if the expense is even justified, depending on the place a musician is at in their career.

All in all, an awesome night for music and chicks. Kudos to Mandy for coordinating it.

Grammy Nominations announced

http://content.grammy.com/grammy_awards/51st_show/list.aspx

I'm really impressed that they nominated M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" for Record of the Year. I also have to admit to loving Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" in spite of myself.

Best Female Pop Vocal Peformance, Katy Perry?? You've got to be kidding me... Ah, well, predictably the Committee made some interesting choices.

Kudos on nominations to Zappa Plays Zappa in Best Rock Instrumental Performance category; and these Austinites(!) Grupo Fantasma for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album; Pinetop Perkins for Best Traditional Blues Album; Marcia Ball for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

New tracks from J. Tillman

Check out these (free, legal) tracks from J. Tillman , also the drummer for Fleet Foxes (who are awesome in their own right).

His album, Vacilando Territory Blues, is out digitally now but hits stores in January. If you like singer/songwriter jewels in the vein of Ryan Adams or Nick Drake, my guess is you'll like him.
