I had forgotten how much I loved this album! Upon listening as an adult, ok, maybe it's not a classic but it always will be in my mind because I have so many fond memories attached to it. I still know all the words to most of the songs, especially "Love the World Away", "Lookin' for Love (In all the Wrong Places), and of course "Lyin' Eyes" and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." My (quite a bit younger) boyfriend looked at me like I was slightly insane and wasn't too thrilled about playing all four sides of the double-album, but we did anyway.

These two recipes from my new Canyon Ranch Nourish cookbook were easy and satisfying. Each one only takes about 10 minutes to prepare but it's a little hard to coordinate the two to finish around the same time. I'd suggest washing and tearing your kale, washing and deshelling/deveining your shrimp, and getting all the spices out and ready before you start any portion of the process. Sidenote: I also made Green Chile Scrambled Eggs from this cookbook this morning and they were also really easy, healthy and stupendously filling and tasty. I had all of the ingredients for these recipes already on hand and they're all in season.

I feel like I've come a long way from "I don't know whether I'm supposed to rinse poultry before cooking" and "Oops, I accidentally spent three hours making homemade soup and didn't notice the tiny bugs on the chard until they were floating in our bowls." I'm, frankly, shocked that I find cooking as soothing as I do- I didn't come from a household that did a lot of it. We always ate healthy meals and I grew up knowing that sugar, refined carbs, and processed foods weren't the best choices but my parents didn't spend a lot of time and energy cooking elaborate meals. I suppose that won't be something I'll continue to do if/when I have kiddos either... juggling life can sometimes be hard. Which is why I think it's even more important to take simple moments and make them sacred.

I'm not one bit religious but I find myself saying a silent prayer of thanks every time I sit down to food that nourishes my body and soul.

I knew I had reached another level in my cooking when, after a stressful and busy weekend, I came home Sunday night and preferred cooking over going out and grabbing food. It's become therapeutic and, honestly, I usually enjoy what I cook much more than what I can get at a lot of restaurants here in San Antonio.

I've also figured out that the Adele station on Pandora is one of my faves - lots of singalong-friendly choices across the map, from Adele (duh) to John Legend to Regina Spektor. Singing while cooking is one of the best possible combinations. And this dinner was stellar.

Some notes on these: I used skin-on red potatoes for the mashers and let them simmer 20-30 minutes (as opposed to the 10 minutes they recommend) and added local cabbage and bacon. It's possible to use high-quality real bacon bits for the tilapia coating instead of cooking your own bacon, but you definitely want some natural, nitrate-free cooked bacon for the mashers. The tilapia is messy but delicious. The bibb lettuce salad is great with bibb lettuce but you can sub any other type of lettuce you like, preferably something local and organic. I toasted the pine nuts in the oven for 10 minutes on 300 degrees- this adds a nice touch of flavor. The homemade dressing with shallots is great but you could also use an oil/vinegar prepared dressing and/or red onion for the salad.

As with everything, this is best served with a little bit of wine and a lot of love! Bon apetit!

I'm not sure where cookbook authors get their listed prep times - this one says 10 minutes, which was far from true for me. It took me more like thirty. It was worth it, though. I was admittedly and severely hungover today and this was a great hangover elixir. With local kale and turnips, as well as carrots, garlic, onion, cannellini beans and a little bit of nitrate-free, uncured bacon for flavoring, this turned out to be a healthy, light meal. The only thing that might have made it better would have been homemade vegetable broth but I didn't have the devotion or energy for that tonight; nor did I have much energy for music selection so I turned on an SNL re-run. I got lucky - TV On the Radio was performing.

Off to a weekend of letting someone else (a pro, in a restaurant) cook for me! Back to my kitchen on Sunday.

In celebration of this glorious weather, I threw The Beach Boys on the record player and whipped up this delish and easy lunch. This album makes me happy- classic Beach Boys with a couple of songs that sound like they could be new indie rock. For lunch, I used wild shrimp, fresh rosemary, and local mushrooms, tomatoes, and basil. Greenling is the best! The result was a light, soupy pasta perfect for the spring-like weather.

I know what's for dinner tonight, the toughest decision will be what the soundtrack will be...

This was a favorite! Highly recommend both of these fast and tasty recipes.

Lessons learned:
1) Cooking after a couple of beers and some Golden Tee, while it may be riskier, is usually more fun.
2) Dancing a little jig around the living room while the broiler heats up is a nice diversion.
3) Bacon (especially when it's thick-cut, local, natural, no-nitrate bacon), garlic, and olive oil make everything better.
4) A dash of sweetness (ginger) takes the bite out of the red pepper spice in both these dishes. Probably a good metaphor for dealing with life.

I think I enjoy cooking so much because it is both control and creation. For so many years, as an aspiring professional ballet dancer, I had such a strained relationship with food. It's nice to be able to control what I'm putting in my body, creating something beautiful in appearance and function.

This recipe, and many others, is a bit like choreography. I had three pots going and the squash roasting in the oven at the same time. You've got to whisk the sauce at the right time, saute the escarole, fold the mixture into the noodles. It really is, in a fundamental way, like dancing.

And, when it's over, and this beauty with bubbling gruyere and parmesan on top emerges from the oven, I can share this creation with someone I love and know it's not just pleasure, it's nourishment. It's good for my soul and my body. And Willie's voice in the background probably added a touch of magic.

New songs from Austin artist gfire - and her birthday party show tonight

If you haven't heard of her yet, gfire is an incredibly hard-to-define Austin singer-songwriter with an unusual Kate Bush-inspired sound. Her music has been featured on over 200 radio and television stations around the world and two of her songs (less is more (rm 61 mix)) and (i wouldn't stop) have recently been added to NPR's Undercurrents.

I was lucky enough to get a rare preview of "fade to blue", one of the songs from her upcoming albums choosing her own colours!!. It's a mix of blues with minimal electronic beats and features Danny Barnes on banjo, Warren Hood on fiddle and Danny Ray Young (in his last studio appearance ever) on washboard. Great sound.

"pink" is a trippy sitar-guitar (Denny Gilbert from Lizzi and the Lovers) melded with ethereal vocals (gfire), tabla (Jason McKenzie from Atash) and viola (Andrew Noble from Death is not a Joyride). This one is a favorite of mine. gfire has a free download of "pink" via her website along with a presale option on her new CD.

Tonight, July 24, she is hosting her 3rd annual “hot pink birthday party” at Austin Java, 12th and Lamar from 8-11 p.m. The show is completely free, open to all ages and partygoers are encouraged to either wear a pink outfit or bring a pink birthday item. A grand prize will be awarded to the person with the best pink costume. Guests will enjoy a diverse serving of all original sounds and are invited to show off their own hot pink colors.

The “hot pink birthday party” is a fundraiser for the production of gfire’s new CD “choosing my own colours!!” gfire will be pre-selling copies of the new CD and showcasing new songs from the album, giving fans a sneak peek at what’s to come.

Mumford and Sons - Sigh No More Review

Mumford & Sons' "Little Lion Man" was one of those rare songs that stopped me in the moment, made me turn the radio up, shush my boyfriend, and immediately google the lyrics to find out... "What the hell is this?!" (like, as in, "I have to have it"). I loved the song so much I went ahead and bought the full album, trusting that it would live up to "Little Lion Man," and it has. I obviously wasn't the only one who felt this way - they've been touring worldwide and, according to their website, their debut album ultimately shot up to #1 on itunes.

Most of the album evokes the exact same feelings as the aforementioned song- It is purely gorgeous. But it's not just gorgeous - the lyrics are beautiful and touching, the instrumentation is unique and perfectly produced letting the vocals share the stage equally, and the harmonies will give you chills (I'm willing to bet on that). All that banjo rocks, too. Not all of the songs are as memorable as "Little Lion Man" but, as a whole, the entire album is fun, emotive, and totally listenable. It has ample feeling and intensity without being weepy.

The bio on their website describes their style as "a gutsy, old-time sound that marries the magic of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young with the might of Kings Of Leon." I hesitate to compare them in any way to Kings of Leon but the truth and purity behind the music could definitely be compared to CSNY. This one will definitely be on frequent rotation on my ipod.

Tegan and Sara Review

Several things on the agenda for this week's blog update.

First and foremost, a quick summary of the Tegan and Sara show Friday, 2/26, at Bass Concert Hall here in Austin. I wasn't prepared for how great they would match with this venue, given that is a seated performance hall and their music is pretty upbeat and, although multi-instrumental, not really orchestral- but it was a great pairing. It made me simultaneously wish that I had a musical sister who wanted to start a band with me and that I was an adorable lesbian (which, as I'm sure you know, they both are as well as being twins); alas, I'm a straight only child so all I can do is live vicariously through them.

This was one of the best-executed shows I've seen, right on par with big-money, big-name artists like Leonard Cohen. The band was stellar and everyone segued easily from song to song with just enough banter to make the audience feel close to Tegan and Sara but not so much that you started thinking to yourself "Ok, ok, get back to the music." The lighting complimented the songs perfectly and the harmonies were gorgeous. There was a great mix of songs from their most recent album and older crowd favorites. I think the best thing about them is that they both manage to come across 100% confident with flawless execution in their music but, when they chatted with the audience, they seemed adorably awkward. Two thumbs up, highly recommended, whatever other cliches you can think of- just go see them if you get the chance.

If you weren't one of the lucky few who got a ticket to see Lissie open for City and Colour last Thursday at Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, I won't rub it in except for saying this - it was a killer show and she is even more impressive live than I expected. She and her band were stellar and passionate enough to make you feel like it was their first time playing these songs live. And, as a side note, I met her and her down-to-earth attitude and approachability made me like her even more.

TraceInvader's Favorite Albums of 2009

This is one of the most fun, self-indulgent things I do all year. Revisiting all of the music I enjoyed (and discovering a few things I wasn't listening to) is like going back to every stellar meal I had and getting a re-do without having to count calories... mmm... the escargot and fig martinis of tuneage.

I like to call this a "favorites" list instead of a "best of" list because music, like all art, is so subjective. What touches, titillates, inspires someone all depends on personal preference and what is happening in your world at that moment. For my own reasons, these are my top 13 albums of 2009 in no particular (ok, alphabetical) order.

1. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns: I loved Fur and Gold. I think Two Suns surpasses it. Natasha Khan (aka Bat for Lashes) is a true artist whose music is tough to categorize. Expansive, orchestral, dramatic and beautiful.

2. Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse - Dark Night of the Soul: You have to dig a little bit to find this in a place you can still download it. Here's a hint. This album is a collaboration between Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse with featured singers you may have heard of like The Shins, Frank Black, Julian Casablancas, and Vic Chesnutt. It's designed to accompany a photo book by David Lynch. (Anyone remember the mysterious posters that were displayed around Austin during SXSW last year?) It's a little bit dark, multilayered and pretty.. go get it.

3. El Perro del Mar - Love Is Not Pop: It's no surprise that El Perro del Mar has collaborated with Lykke Li. Her sound is very similar and, like Lykke Li, her lyrics may not always be deep but this album is really listenable and loveable. (Unintentional use of alliteration there..Lordy!)

4. Florence + the Machine - Lungs: I shouldn't have waited so long to get this- I mean, it's been out since July. Florence Welch has a voice that can definitely fit in among the other British soul crooners like Adele and Amy Winehouse but she adds extra layers of instruments and unexpected twists that remind me more of My Brightest Diamond than Lily Allen.

5. The Grouch & Eligh - Say G&E!: First heard this album thanks to a Paste Magazine download and was immediately hooked. West Coast members of the Living Legends crew (including Aesop and Scarab) with positive lyrics, kickass hooks and production. Really, really fun to listen to from start to finish with no hos or snow.

6. Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3: It's HOVA. He's back. I mean, Empire State of Mind is worth the price of admission alone. Enough said.

7. Lissie - Why You Runnin' I have a friend over at Nettwerk who introduced me to Lissie and I heard her play live on KCRW shortly afterward. This is her debut album and, if it's any indication of where she's going, we'll be hearing a lot more about her. Stellar songwriting - beautiful, at times heart-wrenching, songs.

8. Metric - Fantasies: Emily Haines' of Broken Social Scene's "side project" - I've listened to this over and over again. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a breakthrough album but it is really solid and manages to tow that thin line between gloomy and danceable, which is a kind of bipolar I can always get behind.

9. Miike Snow - s/t: Thanks to RCRDLBL, I heard some of this album (and remixes of the original songs) pretty early on. Always liked it but it's continued to move up in my '09 rankings the more I listen to it. Swedish guys with a knack for pop with a fuzzy edge.

10. Mos Def - The Ecstatic: I've got an enormous amount of respect for Mos Def but can't really say I've ever wanted to put on one of his albums and listen to it all the way through. Not so with this one. It's the Mos Def you know who writes meaningful, inspiring poetry but it's hooky and makes you want to bounce.

11. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Pt. 2: No shocker that this is stylistically similar to Ghostface Killah since they are both part of the Wu-Tang Clan. It's a sequel to Raekwon's solo debut back in 1995 and, although I never listened to the '95 album, I'm tempted to go back and get it now that I'm hooked on Pt 2. It's predictably dark but it's good.

12. Regina Spektor - Far: Always a big fan of Regina Spektor's, I expected I would enjoy Far but I was surprised just how much. She is consistently amazing - lyrically, musically, and magical-vibe-ly.

13. Various Artists - Dark Was the Night: Featuring a top-notch cast of artists including David Byrne, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens, Jose Gonzalez, and Dave Sitek, this compilation is one of the few I've heard that goes to a good cause (Red Hot Organization, raising awareness for HIV/AIDS) and is actually a killer album. It's a 31-song set and there aren't many throwaways on here.

What can I say about Luna Tart's dinnertime performance at Eastside Showroom last night? I felt like I was in some kind of New York/Paris Twilight Zone. She's a kooky cabarat singer with just enough humor added to her tinged-with-darkness songs to keep you giggling instead of crying. Add a ukulele, accordion, and piano to her Blanche Dubois post-breakdown vibe (thanks, Jamie, for that observation!) and you get an entertaining, if surreal, experience.

I had the pleasure of (somewhat accidentally) stumbling onto The Song, a songwriter's in-the-round night at Flipnotics on Thursday. I've been familiar with BettySoo (love her..and she's been getting some good local Austin publicity lately) and Abi Tapia but had never seen Charlie Faye. The trio took turns playing three of their own songs and backing each other on harmonies, guitar, harmonica, mandolin and accordion.

BettySoo opened with my favorite of her songs, Never Knew No Love. I really hope we start hearing that one on the radio soon - "Never knew no dirt didn’t come off in the kitchen/ Never knew no stain like the one I'm hiding now/ Never knew no man like the one I been missing/ Never knew no love could break love’s vow." Abi Tapia sang a few of her rootsy country songs with an extra dose of twang. Her style doesn't resonate with me as much as BettySoo's but she is uber-talented and a natural performer - great, radio-friendly songwriting, too. Charlie Faye was the favorite of my Flipnotics host for the night (he even bought her CD on the spot) and, although I didn't feel intensely about her music, she was enjoyable and without question adorable in her white eyelet dress and cowboy boots. BettySoo hosts these singer/songwriter nights almost every Thursday and Flipnotics is generally a great place to hear music given the quiet intimacy of their listening room. I highly recommend checking it out.

Mother Falcon at Mohawk August 30th

I have a new favorite, local multi-instrumental band. They're called Mother Falcon, they are almost as huge a group as the Polyphonic Spree (ok, maybe about 10 or 20 people short of that), and they're a really talented group of young people.

Mother Falcon is made up of an aggregate of 15 musicians (that's the total listed on their MySpace page, although all 15 weren't onstage last night at the Mohawk) playing a mix of instruments including mandolin, violin, trumpet, xylophone, accordion, cello and more, with shared lead vocalist duties. Tamir Kalifa sang the majority of the vocals and he led the group with charisma and glee [Correction via 'Anonymous' below: Most vocals are Nick Gregg with Tamir singing a few songs]. They've got a sort of baroque pop feel with sweeping symphonic arrangements and list Beethoven, Shostakovitch, Ravel, Reich, Beirut, Bon Iver, and the Strokes as inflences.

They've been written up briefly in the Chronicle and are currently part of the Dell Lounge Sound and the Jury contest for a possibility at a spot at ACL. They're at #6 so obviously I'm not the first one to get onboard this train.

Check them out at their next show. Not sure when it will fall, as there are no upcoming shows listed on their website but they are worth keeping on your radar.

Industry Chat: Terry McBride of Nettwerk - Is Ownership of Music Simply Irrelevant?

Terry McBride, CEO of Nettwerk (a combo music management company and record label) is known throughout the music industry as a progressive thinker - one forcibly moving the industry into a potentially sustainable future. Nettwerk manages the careers of numerous artists including Sarah McLachlan, Jars of Clay, Barenaked Ladies as well as serving as the record label for up and coming artists like Great Lake Swimmers, Rosie Thomas, Datarock and State Radio. McBride's thoughts on things like music ownership aren't what you'd expect from someone in his position. You'll see his stunning comments on that - and a number of other topics, in our exclusive Q&A below.

Q: You've been hard at work, as have many others, at "reinventing" the very broken music business for some time now. What have you tried that holds particular promise? Any helpful failures?

The key in all that we have tried is the need to align all interests within an Artist's business. Each part (Fans, Label, Publishing, Songwriting, Live, Sponsorships, Merchandise, Marketing, Promotion) are all interdependent of each other. So to have the best chance of success they need to be treated as one. Failures? Laughter, lots of lessons along the way though.

Q: What's the idea with Polyphonic - your new partnership that includes Radiohead's management? Is it basically just VC for individual artists? Is there a core belief driving this new concept?

Polyphonic is really a simple model. Create a Joint Venture with the Artist, align all parts of the business as stated above, put a monetary fund within the business that allows the Artist Manager to hire all the "best in practice" services that best fit that Artist. This model I believe gives the Artist the best chance of having a vibrant and authentic career.

Q: Let's talk about intellectual property. How do the artists you're working with view their rights versus consumer realities? Is it different for "major" versus "developing" artists? Should artists yield to giving away a lot of music to generate a fanbase?

There is no same answer to these questions from Nettwerk's roster. What I can say is that the Artist's desire is to create what they love and they need a monetary way to live while doing such. My own personal view is "the fans own the songs." A Song becomes popular when enough fans attach their own individual emotions to what the Artist has created. My role is to figure out a way to monetize that emotional connection in an authentic and compelling manner that adds value to the Fan and the Artist. Giving away music as you suggested is one manner.

Q: Nettwerk has tried to move beyond just selling records. With Barenaked Ladies, you took a set of IP and repackaged it numerous ways to create a diverse, non-CD dependent revenue model. Did it work as a sustainable concept beyond the initial success? Will you be trying further iterations?

With BNL they are in a place now where they make more revenue from their 3 independent albums than what they make from their 8 Warner albums. Where they decide to go from here is their choice, but what's great is that they have a choice.

Q: Do you believe direct artist subscription models, either single artist like Jack White has done with The Dead Weather or aggregators like Brite Revolution herald some kind of significant evolution for how artists will make their livings?

I don't think it's that simple. It's about delivering value and being authentic. I think models like Pandora and Spotify will get a lot of traction as they deliver on those levels. I do believe that we are seeing a profound shift from "content is king" to "context as king." With the mobile app revolution in full swing the need to own goes away, the need to access goes way up.

Q: If you could get all of America's music consumers in one room, what would you want to tell them? Besides that they should take up yoga, that is. ;-)

Find a way to support those artists you love so that they can continue to create. I think Yoga is good for everyone, I know it makes me a much happier and I am way more fit.... if not Yoga then consider something that requires exercise and takes your mind away from all the trial and tribulations of day to day life.

Sufjan Stevens seems to be taking 2009 a little more easily than 2008, though he has a film release coming up in October and was recently the subject of a remix mixtape. There's no word yet on how his 50-albums-for-50-states project is going, but for now fans can whet their appetite with nearly a month of tour dates this fall, mostly through the East Coast and Midwest, accompanied by Cryptacize. The venues are small, however, and Asthmatic Kitty Records warns that tickets will be limited. Dates:

Jackson Browne, Republicans settle lawsuit

LOS ANGELES – Jackson Browne has settled a lawsuit and received an apology from Sen. John McCain and the Republican Party over use of his song "Running on Empty" during last year's presidential campaign.

The settlement announced Tuesday includes a pledge by the GOP not to use any musicians' work without proper permission in future campaigns, a statement that Browne said he hoped would benefit other artists.

Browne sued McCain and the Republican National Committee and the Ohio Republican Party last year over use of "Running on Empty" in a Web ad mocking Democrat Barack Obama's proposed energy policies.

McCain's loss in November didn't end the lawsuit, which had been slated for trial early next year. Formal settlement papers have yet to be filed with the court.

"This settlement is really a great affirmation of what I believed my rights to be, and all writers' rights to be," Browne said in an interview with The Associated Press. "One would hope that a presidential candidate would not only know the law but respect it. It was a matter of bringing that issue to bear."

Financial details of the settlement were not announced.

McCain didn't know about the ad, which was created by the Ohio Republican Party and removed after Browne complained, said the statement, attributed to McCain and the state and national parties.

"We apologize that a portion of the Jackson Browne song 'Running on Empty' was used without permission," the statement said.

Browne said he hoped the lawsuit and its successful resolution would have an impact on future political campaigns by putting an end to cavalier attitudes about artists' copyrights.

"I would hope that they would think twice about taking someone's song without permission and understand that the law was put to the test and our rights prevailed," he said.

McCain's campaign ran afoul of several musicians during his presidential run, including the Foo Fighters, Heart and John Mellencamp. Obama wasn't immune either — soul legend Sam Moore asked his campaign to stop using "Soul Man."

Browne released "Running on Empty" — the song and an album by the same name — in 1977. According to the lawsuit, the album has sold more than 7 million copies.

The lawsuit said Browne was concerned that use of his music would cause people to conclude that he was endorsing McCain, even though the 60-year-old singer-songwriter is a self-described liberal and contributed to Obama's campaign.

It remains a concern for Browne.

"Thousands of people come to an event or they see it on TV and they see John Mellencamp's song being used or Ann and Nancy Wilson's song being used and they assume a kind of solidarity and a kind of endorsement that simply does not exist," Browne said.

"Hopefully it will just go to illustrate there is a legal remedy for this."

Browne and his attorney both said they expect the settlement, apology and McCain and the parties' high profiles to prevent some future problems.

"The educational significance cannot be understated," said Browne's attorney, Lawrence Iser, a partner in the entertainment litigation firm Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump & Aldisert.

"People like Jackson have the right to license the use of their songs for political campaigns, or to choose not to," Iser said. He noted that even though the ad using Browne's song played on the Internet, copyright law doesn't differentiate between those and other broadcasts.

Browne said the typical remedy to misuse of one's music is to file a copyright infringement lawsuit, but that not all musicians can afford that. He brought his lawsuit, he said, to help protect the next generation of artists.

"If you don't uphold the law that allows people to make a living from this, the result is you won't have people able to do this work," Browne said.

Wilco drafted a slew of high-profile guests for its Monday night (July 13) show at Keyspan Park near New York's Coney Island, collaborating with Feist, Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste and Yo La Tengo during the encore of the performance.

Opening act Yo La Tengo joined Wilco for a raucous run through the noise rock epic "Spiders (Kidsmoke)," while Feist and Droste joined in on percussion on "Hoodoo Voodoo" to close the evening.

Earlier, Feist dueted with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on "You and I," which they will reprise tonight on "The Late Show With David Letterman."

Feist remained on stage to sing on "California Stars," and was joined by Droste for that cut as well as "You Never Know," from Wilco's brand new album "Wilco (the Album)." Tweedy also led the sold-out crowd in a rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

The show spanned Wilco's 16-year canon, blending newer tracks like "Impossible Germany" and "Bull Black Nova" with fan requests such as "I'm Always in Love" and "Can't Stand It."

"Wilco (the Album)" was released on June 30 and sold 99,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 4, a career best.

Jim James To Relase George Harrison Cover Album

Although roots-rock act My Morning Jacket are enjoying some much needed downtime after a big 2008, frontman Jim James isn't resting. For his first official solo outing, James will debut a George Harrison tribute EP entitled "Tribute To" under the name "Yim Yames" on August 4. The six song set is due on ATO and was recorded a few days after Harrison passed away in 2001. James takes on four of Harrison's tracks from "All Things Must Pass" and two tunes that he penned with the Beatles: "Long, Long, Long" and "Love You To."

The set is said to evoke a "raw, minimalist feel" with James utilizing just his voice and an acoustic guitar. James refers to Harrison as "a prime example of the healing power of music" in the liner notes.

Also slated is an album with indie folk rockers Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and M. Ward, under the tongue-in-cheek moniker "Monsters of Folk." The fifteen song, self-titled set is due September 22 on Shangri-La Music. The four have shared stages dating back to 2004 when they embarked on a tour together that was later referred to by the musicians and crew as the "Monsters of Folk." The studio recording efforts have taken place over the last two years with all four members playing every instrument featured on the recording.

My Morning Jacket have risen over the last few years to be a dominant force on the touring circuit, capping 2008 with a sold out New Year's Eve gig at Madison Square Garden. Their recent studio efforts have also faired well; 2008's "Evil Urges" has sold 194,000 according to Nielson SoundScan and its best seller is 2005's "Z" at 243,000.

With the success of My Morning Jacket, James has been stepping out on his own more- he recently joined the likes of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow and Eddie Vedder at David Lynch's "Change Begins Within" Concert at Radio City Music Hall. James also recently ventured down to New Orleans and recorded with legendary act Preservation Hall Jazz Band for an upcoming benefit album for legendary concert venue Preservation Hall.

Although no dates are firm, a Monsters of Folk tour is expected to begin in September.

What happens when members from two of the most buzzed-about bands of '08 join forces? Apparently, quaint chamber pop + afrobeat ditties = club jamz. That's what early tracks have led us to expect from Discovery, the side project of Vampire Weekend keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot singer Wes Miles. Their fun-loving debut album, LP, will hit streets July 7, just in time to rival some our favorite songs of summer.

Despite your potential first inclinations, this electro-dance outfit doesn't appear to be The Postal Service reincarnated. Rather, it's sounds more like these guys unabashedly donned their top-siders and sweaters in the club, rubbing shoulders with Jamie Foxx and T-Pain. Granted, song titles like "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" sound a bit more charming than verses from "Blame It." (Tangential side note: Have you seen the cameos in that music video? Forest Whitaker, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ron Howard!?)

Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and former Wilco member Jay Bennett died in his sleep early Sunday morning. He was 45. Bennett is perhaps best known for his songwriting and lush, symphonic keyboard work on the Wilco albums Being There, Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. As shown in the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Bennett left Wilco during the recording of Hotel over creative disagreements with Jeff Tweedy, the group's lead songwriter, and a few weeks before his death, Bennett sued the group for unpaid royalties from his film appearance and his album work.

Before joining Wilco, Bennett had played in the early '90s alternative pop group Titanic Love Affair, and since leaving the group, he has recorded several solo albums, including last year's Whatever Happened I Apologized, which was released as a free download. He had also done session work and production for artists such as Allison Moorer, Tim Easton, Tommy Keene, Jeff Black, Blues Traveler and Sheryl Crow.

At the time of his death, Bennett was living in Urbana, Illinois, and was set to have hip replacement surgery in the near future. His cause of death is currently unknown.

Wilco beats leaks by streaming its own album

Wilco on Wednesday began streaming its new album, "Wilco (The Album)," in its entirety from its Web site. The band began circulating the record about a month ago, and anticipated that the album would be leaked on file-sharing networks. As soon as it appeared via P2P, the band offered it up as a free stream, reasoning that hardcore fans would pre-order the new album regardless, and showing confidence that fence-sitters would find it engaging enough to buy it as well, or at least be aware that the band will probably be bringing its (amazing) live show to town later this year. Wilco also asked folks who'd downloaded the record illegally to donate to Chicago-area charity the Inspiration Corporation as penance.

Listening to the first song on the album, "Wilco (The Song)," which repeatedly mentions the band's name, I wondered how many other rock bands have name-checked themselves. (Hip-hop artists are another story--most of them do it at least once.)

In 2008, No Depression shuttered its print publication and launched a website, NoDepression.com, which in 2009 has transitioned into a community-oriented site that will soon house an extensive archive of the former print magazine's content. Talk about starting off on the wrong foot. Perry Farrell tore a calf muscle shortly after Jane’s Addiction took the stage in Atlanta last night, but says the injury won’t disrupt the band’s touring schedule.

It happened during the first song of the band’s set at Lakewood Amphitheatre, but trooper that he is, the Lollapalooza founder went on to finish the set. Farrell was taken to Atlanta Medical Center after the show, according to a publicist.

Associated Press reports doctors told Farrell to stay off his leg for several days, but the singer says he still plans to perform Tuesday night at the band’s next gig in Austin.

Guess you could say he still has a leg to stand on.

Update! Dave Navarro Twittered from the tour bus this morning, saying Farrell is fine and the band is on the road to Austin.

But Wednesday was a dark one for members of the extended Willie Nelson family as Locke died of an apparent heart attack at his home in Briarcliff, about 30 miles west of Austin. He was 60.

“He wasn’t feeling well and Shaye (Locke’s girlfriend) called for EMS at around two in the afternoon,” said Bryan Dixon, a manager at the Hilltop. “Poodie collapsed just as the ambulance got there, but they couldn’t revive him.” As news spread, Locke’s 133-capacity club quickly filled up with mourners.

“Willie loved Poodie’s exuberance,” said Casey Monahan of the Texas Music Office, who hung out with Locke Saturday at Nelson’s show at Carl’s Corner. “Willie’s whole thing is living in the moment and that was Poodie.”

In Willie’s band of gypsies, Locke was the ringleader who had a hug for everyone no matter how much else was going on. Everybody loved Poodie, the only roadie with his own logo and line of barbecue sauces, but there was work to be done so both of the Nelson crew buses had signs that said “Poodie’s on the other bus.”

“He was the heart and soul of the road crew,” said Joe Nick Patoski, author of the definitive Nelson biography “An Epic Life.” Although the touring life can be stressful, Poodie always had a smile because, after all, he had the best seat in the house.

“I do not recall ever seeing him any way but calm,” said lawyer Bobby Earl Smith, who met Locke as a member of Freda and the Firedogs. “All hell would be falling around him and he just kept keeping on, slow, deliberate, getting the job done.”

Locke was a gentle giant who treated everyone special, which is why it was inevitable that, in 2002, he opened Poodie’s Hilltop Bar & Grill. It would be a place where Willie’s cronies and crew could hang out between tours, but Poodie spent many of his “off” days working on his laptop at the bar, setting up stage specifications for tours. He’d always drop everything, however, when an old friend popped in.

The Hilltop became a place where the famous, such as Willie, Merle Haggard, Garth Hudson of the Band and Big & Rich would sometimes play for hours, unannounced.

As his mother Gloria “Momma” Locke loved to say, Poodie won the Most Beautiful Baby contest in Waco when he was just a few months old. The nickname “Poodie” came from a younger sister who couldn’t pronounce “pretty” in describing her sibling.

A 12-year-old Locke met Nelson, from nearby Abbott, in Waco. Before hooking up with Willie just before “Red Headed Stranger” blew up, Locke was a roadie for B.W. Stevenson.

“Indecision may or may not be our biggest problem,” Locke quoted Willie as summing up the life of being on the road for up to 275 days a year. Although he’s met countless celebrities through the years, Poodie’s only asked for two autographs: John Wayne and Walter Cronkite.

Locke worked a Willie show at Carl’s Corner Saturday and seemed to be in good health, according to Patoski. He’s survived by his girlfriend Shaye, his sister Cindy and his mother.

You were lucky if you knew Poodie Locke, a larger-than-life folk hero who epitomized, behind the scenes, the humor and humility and edication his boss presented onstage. You can be sure there is devastation in Willie World. A member of the immediate family, Willie’s spiritual kid brother, has passed on.

There’s a little less love out on the road. But, as Poodie knew better than anyone, the road still calls.

There's hardly a corner of the entertainment business John Doe hasn't explored.

John Doe has gone from punk to folk, and says technology helps and hurts.

He's not one of the people who waxes on about rights and wrongs in the music and film industries without any hands-on knowledge. The band Doe formed, X, was part of the first wave of punk rock bands that stormed Los Angeles in the late 1970s. The band's 1981 "Wild Gift" was named Album of the Year by Rolling Stone and The New York Times. Doe is also an actor and has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows, including "Boogie Nights," "Roadhouse," and "CSI Miami."

Thirty years after founding X, Doe is churning out well-received country and folk albums on indie label Yep Roc Records, and has developed a love-hate relationship with technology. He appreciates how it can help simplify the recording process, but isn't a fan of the sound quality on many digital music players.

He also complains that file sharing hurts musicians. He thinks artists deserve to make a living.

Just weeks after the debut of his latest album, "Country Club," recorded with The Sadies, Doe agreed to speak with CNET News.

Q: How has technology changed the music industry?
Doe: Everything is more immediate and you can do things remotely. Anytime you can look backwards, you think everything was so naive back then. People still have vinyl. I think CDs are going to become more collectible because they hold a lot more information and they sound better than most of the files that you can get from iTunes and from people sharing stuff.

What do you think of file sharing and how do you think it impacts music?
Doe: I think that the music industry was asking for it and that's why they got smacked down. But I don't believe in music just being free because everybody deserves to make a living and it is intellectual property and you have to pay something for it. I think people that just share files and don't care and think "That's bull**** man, they're making plenty of money," never wrote a song and they never were proud of that song and feel as though they should get paid for it and things like that.

What did you mean that the music industry had it coming?
Doe: They stuck their heads in the sand. They spent too much money foolishly. A CD costs a $1 to make. Cassettes were $10 and CDs were $20...You sort of deserve it.

What do you mean music can be made remotely?
Doe: I get (drunk) and sort of put the whole process on remote...It's the drugs (laughter). I got to keep myself as heavily medicated as possible...really, The Sadies and I played a festival and we had a great time. They backed me up on a few of my songs. Kathleen Edwards was also there. I thought "Oh my god, this was a country record I could make." It wouldn't sound weak or too polished. My voice is sort of...it's a good voice but it's not a weird or distinctive voice so me with Nashville country backing would be a snooze. But me with The Sadies is exciting. A year later I went to Canada. We cranked out about 20 songs in maybe 10 days. I took files back to California, added a couple of people (to the tracks)...added some overdubs and (inaudible) mixed it in Toronto and sent me YouSendIt files, which I downloaded and then could play in Bakersfield, where I live, on my stereo through the computer.

It was a big file, just like the mix. I could play it on my stereo so I know what it sounds like and could call up and say, "Hey this is great. What if this thing here was better?" After a conversation or two, we could form four or five mixes and everybody was happy. And I didn't have to hang out in Toronto, which is a lovely city, for two weeks or 10 days while they mixed it.

And you wouldn't have been able to do that a decade ago?
Doe: Well, I guess you could have five years ago. You can do all kinds of things while they're mixing at the same time. You can go to a recording studio and sing to a track as it's being mixed across the country. There is all kinds of crazy stuff you can do. This was a poor man's version of that.

Some people argue that all music should be free and they have a right to music. Are they rationalizing or are they...
Doe: That's exactly what they're doing. I think they are foolish and young and haven't experienced what it's like to work for something and haven't suffered the pain, hardship it takes to create something. There is a really great movie that goes back to the 1970s called the "Festival Express." There was this visionary guy from Canada that took The Band and Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead and maybe Gram Parsons on a train to Canada. This is right after Woodstock. And everyone at the gates was saying "This is bull****, $10?" And they broke down the gate and everybody got in for free and they did that at every one of these shows because a precedent had been set.

This guy lost his ass. He had a vision, an incredible vision, and because people were selfish and didn't want to spend $10 and said, "The man is sticking it to us..." Yeah the record companies have been sticking it to the public for a long time but it doesn't mean that the artist shouldn't get paid.

It's just the reality and you can't bitch about it even though I am a little bit. I think file sharing is great to expose people to music but eventually you should pay for it. I do.

What do you think of the efforts by Trent Reznor and Radiohead to find a new model for the music industry?
Doe: I think they're dozens and dozens of people who are doing that on a small level and on a big level. It's catering to the super fan. All the value-added stuff is worthwhile. I don't have the discipline or the organizational skills to have my own label but I take my hat off to anyone who does. Radiohead does that. Aimee Mann does that. Dozens of punk bands do that. It's a good idea, especially if you have a fan base that's going to pay for that stuff.

Tell me about your experience with record labels?
Doe: They do serve a purpose. But they need to have business skill as well as a love of music. That's kind of rare. I'm still really happy with Yep Roc (recording label). The only thing I would change in any label is to have their accounting practices more transparent so when they send you an accounting you can actually follow it. No, labels aren't bad. But I think major labels in the past were foolish and did take advantage of their artists.

Do you think that will change?
Doe: I don't think it has, no. I think they are still trying to get the super home run, "Thriller," Britney Spears, bazillion selling records...I'm just glad I don't have to deal with that anymore.

When M.I.A. nabbed a spot on this year's TIME 100 list of the most influential people on earth-- alongside people like Oprah Winfrey-- it was damn impressive. But meeting Oprah in person is on another level entirely. She's the Queen of America, people!

M.I.A. met Oprah on Tuesday night at the TIME 100 gala event at New York City's Lincoln Center. And she felt like they made a connection.

According to a post on M.I.A.'s MySpace blog:
"SHE SAID SHE LIKED MY JACKET FROM THE MAGAZINE (THE ONE MY BROTHER GOT FOR ME FROM THE SIDE OF THE STREET AT SXSW 09) SHE SQUEEEEZED MY HAND SO HARD, I WAS CONVINCED SHE CARED. MICHELLE OBAMA GAVE A SPEECH AND THERE WAS MAD SECRET SERVICE IN THE AIR SO I DIDNT GET TO THROW A PAPER PLANE AT HER SAYING 'STOP THE BOMBING OF THE TAMILS IN SRI LANKA'"

Since when was M.I.A. scared of a little secret service?

Perhaps Oprah will consider a "special episode" with M.I.A. about the current civil war in Sri Lanka. Weird to think about, but that could actually happen at this point. I mean, they shook hands! Hard!

According to a story published at ChicagoBreakingNews.com, former Wilco member Jay Bennett filed a lawsuit yesterday against bandleader Jeff Tweedy. The suit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, claims Tweedy owes Bennett "damages of at least $50,000" for his time in the band, including his less-than-favorable depiction in the 2002 Wilco documentary, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.

Bennett's lawsuit (which can be viewed in full here) states that he "is entitled to compensation for his services rendered in the form of continuing and perpetual artist royalty payments." Furthermore, the suit states that Bennett was paid for his time in Wilco, but that the "infrequent partial payments" only amounted to 15% of the band's income. Finally, Bennett's suit argues that Tweedy didn't compensate him for, or obtain the proper release for, Bennett's appearance in I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.

In an e-mail exchange with Paste, Wilco's publicist provided the following statement from Tweedy:

"I know exactly as much as everyone else does. I've read the news and I honestly have no idea what these claims are based on. It was such a long time ago. Aside from everything else, I'm being sued for not paying someone for appearing in a movie I didn't produce. Go figure. I am truly sad it has come to this. I am equally convinced, however, that I have done nothing wrong and that this will be handled fairly and swiftly."

Black Kids and Mates of State in Austin

Black Kids opened for Mates of State for a small but enthusiastic crowd at La Zona Rosa last night, with an appearance by Care-Bear-Pop duo Sunbears!

The night started with Sunbears!, a peppy two-guy duo out of Jacksonville, Florida who used lots of lights, balloons, confetti, and even a huge bubble they floated above the crowd, a la Flaming Lips. Hadn't heard about them before but enjoyed their set. They're off to Houston tonight, then Atlanta before they head back to their home state.

Black Kids followed with a rockin' set that ended with "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You". Click on the link to stream the song at RCRDLBL.com.

Finally, the painfully adorable Mates of State finished out the night. Clearly, they make their marriage work because all of their therapy happens via song, in front of crowds of strangers every night. It's the recipe we should all be so lucky to follow. In the desert, a chronological convergence
At the Coachella Festival, harmony and synergy bridge the generation gap.

The rumbling has been growing in recent years among longtime supporters of the weekend-long Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival that organizers are losing their indie credibility. The grousing began in earnest with Madonna's appearance three years ago: She's too commercial. Last year's inclusion of headliners Prince and Pink Floyd veteran Roger Waters amplified the chorus, and this year's booking of Paul McCartney, the man whose music largely defined mainstream rock in the 1960s and '70s, kicked the skepticism up another notch.

These were not the kinds of alternative music icons that helped launch the event a decade ago (though one such band, the Cure, returned to the desert to close out the mainstage Sunday). McCartney, in particular, was too old, many said, and possessed even less hip factor than Waters, who performed Pink Floyd's rock masterpiece "Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirety.

Well, pigs didn't fly this year -- as they did last time around when Waters’ giant inflatable animal prop took to the skies -- but a Beatle did, delivering an unusually emotion-drenched 2 1/2 -hour performance Friday on the 11th anniversary of the death of his wife Linda.

"It's an emotional day for us," McCartney, 66, told the sea of fans that stretched out before him. "But that's good; that's OK."

Perhaps aiming to ratchet up that hip quotient, McCartney started with "Jet" from "Band on the Run" and moved on to a good number of edgier pieces he doesn't typically play in concert, including a couple from "Electric Arguments," his latest album under the moniker of his experimental side project, the Fireman. At one point he even started riffing on Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady," in homage to that other great left-handed rocker from the '60s.

For those who worried that bringing in more Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members might taint the Coachella experience, this year's other '60s legend, Leonard Cohen, had attendees swaying arm in arm just after sundown Friday, loudly singing his signature anthem, "Hallelujah."

His show was considerably abbreviated from the remarkable 3 1/2 -hour marathon sets he turned in a week earlier at the Nokia Theatre, but it gained intimacy in the Outdoor Theatre, where the setup allowed fans to press close to the stage and to one another, magnifying the communal spirit within Cohen's trek deep into the human soul.

Instead of experiencing a loss of indie authenticity, the mostly young Coachella audience discovered a few things to begrudgingly admire from the culture of their parents and grandparents, beyond just the tie-dyed fashions and headbands that seemed to be the fashion statement of choice this year.

Not that the modern rocker generation wasn't willing to salute a godfather of its own in Morrissey's muscular set, which preceded McCartney's. The erstwhile Smiths singer tapped his new “Years of Refusal” album and reached back to the '80s, showing that even approaching 50, he can still brood with the best of them.

The Killers' gloriously tuneful, grand-scale rock closed out Saturday's mainstage offerings on an especially celebratory note, coming as it did on the heels of M.I.A.'s musically monochromatic hip-hop assault. But in her second year at Coachella, stepping in after Amy Winehouse canceled because of visa problems, singer Maya Arulpragasam was erratic, unable to focus the power of her best politically charged recordings.

But the Killers, like U2 and Bruce Springsteen, two of their key role models, capitalized on the promise of a truth that can transcend the troubles of temporal life with such songs as "All These Things That I've Done" from the band's 2004 debut, "Hot Fuss," to the no-surrender exhortation at the heart of "A Dustland Fairytale" from last year's "Day & Age."

On Sunday, the Mexican Institute of Sound sizzled despite the lunchtime hour of their set. Group founder Camilo Lara snatched bits and pieces from all corners of the musical world: Mexican polka and norteño, punk and even a well-placed sample from Ennio Morricone's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" theme.

Gustavo Santoalalla's electrifying ensemble Bajofondo had the bad luck of going on opposite McCartney on Friday, but even a short listen revealed his inspired update of Argentine folk tradition.

As for other standouts, Austin's Okkervil River drew considerable power out of the basic rock band lineup. Singer-songwriter Will Sheff's wistful, elegiac songs take on big questions and elemental emotions in a way that's fresh and without pretension, energized considerably by guitarist Lauren Gurgiolo's ripped sheets of distortion.

Singer-songwriter Conor Oberst brought his new outfit, the Mystic Valley Band, to Coachella. The group takes him straight into heartland rock territory, and while it's not always as inventive as his Bright Eyes material, Oberst seemed thoroughly inspired fronting the power-packed ensemble clearly inspired by the Band, with a bit of Stones bluesiness tossed into the mix.

Antony Hegarty, realizing it would be impossible to replicate the focused intensity of his recent Disney Hall performance, instead locked into hypnotic and sensual R&B-electronic pulses for his late afternoon set Sunday, again establishing an uncommonly empathetic bond between audience and performer.

The performance by My Bloody Valentine reignited the band's stoically rendered barrage of blistering, distortion-infused rock, delivered at an ear-crushing volume that seemed potent enough to be heard back across the Atlantic.

Beyond the individual performances, musical juxtapositions underscored the unique appeal of the large-scale festival. Whether a master stroke of scheduling or happy accident, the side-by-side sets on Saturday from Afro-Arabic pop group Tinariwen in the Gobi tent and Tucson-based Calexico next door at the Outdoor Stage illustrated connections that aren't always obvious.

Tinariwen vamps on melodic motifs mostly based on the Arabic scale, its singers tapping muezzin vocal practice. Calexico plays spaghetti western rock that leans heavily on music from the American Southwest and Mexico. Because of the Moorish influence on Spanish folk and classical music, the space between Tinariwen's polyrhythmic songs and Calexico's heterogeneous Tex-Mex mix wasn't so great.

Coachella 2009 made it clear the distance between generations and musical camps wasn't nearly as wide as some might have thought -- even as recently as last Friday morning.

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Google's YouTube and Universal Music Group, the world's largest record label, are going into business together in a deal they hope will forge a future for ad-supported music.

UMG's artists and channels have accumulated 6.2 trillion views on YouTube since its inception.

The two announced a licensing and advertising-revenue-sharing agreement today that covers the use of UMG music on YouTube around the world, as well as a joint venture to create a new video site, Vevo, a concept that bears more than a small resemblance to the NBC-News Corp. joint venture meant to create a business for ad-supported TV online, Hulu.

Vevo, which will be launched later this year, initially will have just UMG music, but CEO Doug Morris said he is in talks with Sony Music Entertainment, EMI and Warner Music Group about joining the venture. Warner pulled its content off YouTube in December after an impasse in talks to renew a licensing deal.

The new service changes the old model under which YouTube paid the labels a fraction of a penny when a song was played, either as an official video or a soundtrack for a user-generated video. The economics of the new deal are based on sharing ad revenue.

Like Hulu, Vevo will have its own, separate site and customized, branded player, which can be embedded on other sites, as well as carry pre-roll video ads. YouTube will provide the technology and infrastructure for Vevo, its first outside site. Google CEO Eric Schmidt said he'd like to see YouTube launch other sites, perhaps for other types of content.

UMG's artists and channels have accumulated 6.2 trillion views on YouTube since its inception, according to web-video-analytics company TubeMogul. Sony Music Entertainment has accrued 4.8 trillion views, and Warner Music Group has just over 1 trillion views. Typically music videos account for between 40% and 60% of the top 100 videos at any given time. The deal keeps UMG tracks on YouTube, a vital source of advertiser-friendly content.

Creating a Hulu for music isn't a new idea. Viacom is giving it a try with MTV Music. The next question for Vevo is whether the other labels now follow suit. CBS, ABC and Viacom stood on the sidelines two years ago when NBC and Fox created Hulu; now Viacom is licensing content to the service, and ABC is in talks to join up. The labels desperately need to develop new revenue streams besides the sale of physical CDs.

First it was the Blind Boys of Alabama, then it was the Innocent Criminals. Now, Ben Harper has orchestrated another album with his latest musical entourage, Relentless7. In promotion of their debut album, Harper and Relentless7 have announced a packed schedule of club dates and summer festivals.
Harper's new blues-rock troupe will be hitting the dusty tour trail in May, just months on the heels of its recent SXSW debut. They plan on hitting up Bonnaroo and Sasquatch!, and will even make a stop at Pete Seeger's birthday party.

Ben Harper and Relentless7 will release their debut album, White Lies for Dark Times, on May 5. The single, "Shimmer and Shine," is currently available on iTunes, and the video is up on the band's website.

Felice Brothers go on tour, offer free download

On the Tuesday their fourth album hits stores, the Felice Brothers, in all their vagabond glory, will hit the road for a 21-date tour spanning most of the month of April, as well as a few dates in May and July. The band, comprised of three brothers and a couple of friends from New York's Catskill Mountains, is a much rowdier act than some of the songs you've heard might suggest—much heavier on the washboard and the accordion, and in the process, less so on the piano. Just don't go in expecting the recordings.

Perhaps it was their live set influencing the new material or vice versa, but the latest record, Yonder is the Clock, is a much more, do we dare say, bar-brawl-inspired effort than the self-titled previous turn.

Some of this energy, as well as subtle hints of the band's proclaimed love for hip-hop like Wu-Tang Clan and its members subsequent solo endeavors, can be seen in the bass-pounding "Run Chicken Run," available as a free download from the band's label, Team Love Records.

What will happen to the major labels?

The labels were only ever going to survive as long as they remained the powerful gatekeepers between the artists and a mass audience. To the artists, they are like bouncers at an exclusive nightclub on a January night in Manhattan; you suck up to them while you seethe at them for making you stand out in the cold. The longer you wait, the more resentful you get (yeah, been there).

As I discussed here before, technology is making it possible for an artist to post their song on the Web and immediately make it available to everyone. However, there are still no great solutions for making "everyone" aware of your song and motivating them to go get it -- even if you're giving it away. The labels are still much better than anyone else at mass marketing music because they still have the necessary money, relationships and other resources to do it. Music consumption is on the rise but music "sales" are faltering, so over time the labels are draining their coffers and soon won't be able to even mass market effectively. They will be relegated to making money on the value of their legacy catalog of music -- licensing The Rolling Stones and U2 to film and other similar opportunities.

The label groups aren't resting on their laurels however. They see the inevitable endgame approaching and they have decided to address the situation with a multi-pronged strategy in hopes of delaying the end of their traditional business model as long as possible.

1. They extract multi-million dollar fees from music start-up companies that want to license their catalog.

Over the past few years a lot of venture capital firms and angel investors have poured money into music start-up companies that either stream major label music over the Web or offer it for download. Just to get started, Warner Music Group, SonyBMG, EMI and Universal demand millions of dollars from these start-ups upfront. So, the money has been flowing from the venture capital firms to the start-ups right into the pockets of the major labels. In many cases, it then turns out that these start-up firms pay more money than their business models can support and they're going belly up long before ever turning a profit. A high profile start-up in this space called Spiral Frog was the most recent victim of this type of death. An interesting article about that can be read here.

2. They take an equity stake in new music companies.

Sometimes the labels will forgo a multi-million dollar advance and will even invest money in a new company if they believe enough in the new business. Warner, for example invested $20 million into a music start-up called Lala despite previously having sued the company for copyright infringement. All four major label groups have taken a stake in MySpace Music. However, even these companies' business models are considered to be flawed and headed for what the popular TechCrunch blog that covers this space calls the "dead pool". Although it's more than likely MySpace Music will figure something out before getting there due to being backed by NewsCorp.

3. They do 360 deals with artists

As discussed previously, this is where the labels take a much larger stake in the artists' revenue streams than they used to. Not only do they collect when the artist sells music. They also collect when the artist sells concert tickets, does product endorsements and sells T-shirts and other merchandise.

Between these strategies and the strength of their catalogs, these companies will survive. But in all likelihood they will promote fewer new acts with new music. The risk to return ratio just won't be as attractive as their catalog businesses.

EMI is a good example of how bad things have gotten for the majors. In 2007 it was purchased by a capital firm called Terra Firma, headed by Guy Hands. The company brought in former Google chief information officer Douglas Merrill to head up its digital strategy. This past month both Hands and Merrill exited after Terra Firma had to write down a $1.78 billion loss on their investment. Now, EMI is trying to right itself and figure out what to do going forward.

So this all boils down to the question; what do artists and songwriters have to do today to increase their prospects of making a living -- if not a killing?

The good news is there are a lot of things artists can do. The bad news is that the days of exploding stardom are going the way of the CD and the major labels. Sure, they can get their 15 megabytes of fame doing something that gets lots of attention on YouTube or by getting caught up in a prostitution scandal with a sitting governor like Ashley Alexandra Dupre did. Then, she sold a bunch of her music on a DIY music sales site called AmieStreet. But that didn't last. Her music wasn't appealing enough to enough people to sustain a career in music. Of course, that's not the path an artist will take if they're serious about building long term fans and having a real career.

Today, artists and their managers have to do it all. They have to be their own promotion and marketing team. They have to network, build relationships and nurture their fans.

Most of all, they must come to terms with the fact that no one is going to invest their time and money into the artists' music and careers unless they can see a path to getting a return on that investment. That path is still taking shape in the new music landscape; often referred to as Music 2.0. It's still called show business and not show friends so investors have to have a stomach for risk. Artists can't afford to be bitter about having to do it all themselves and I speak to many who unfortunately are. Artists and their managers have the most to gain in today's business models and they get to keep a lot more of their rights and income than ever before. So, if they are diligent and their music is good they can earn a very decent living.

Online tools that artists can use are changing the landscape very quickly. Radiohead left their label and released their album on their own and used many online tools to track their own progress. A few weeks ago Counting Crows announced they too are leaving their label to go it alone. Granted, these are established bands with brand names. Few artists get to start out on their own with the same advantages but soon we are going to start seeing bands "breaking" all over the Web and bands and their managers need to especially make friends with analytic tools that will help them find their market and then focus like lasers on it.

These analytic services are going to be absolutely key to their future. They can't get where they're going if they don't know where they're starting from and they can't correct their course if they aren't able to see how (or if) their promotion and marketing efforts are working.

Nothing can replace good music, charisma, playing lots of gigs, having a good street team of fans who help artists spread the word and nurturing a growing fan base. However, there are so many tools now directly available to artists to help them do even these things that didn't exist just a few years ago that leveraging them is a must if artists are going to succeed in the new landscape.

I'll leave it here for now, but for good measure I'm throwing in a list of things artists should be doing and if you know any you can pass this list along:

First, they must get attention. Money will follow.

1. Artists should sign up to as many online social networks as possible where they can post theirs or their band's profile and music. They need to network with fans and similar bands on those sites. They include but are not limited to:
a. MySpace
b. Facebook
c. iMeem
d. Broadjam
e. Mog
f. Reverb Nation

2. They need to get valuable feedback and analytic information on their music from focus groups and real industry professionals

b. Music Xray (my company)
c. They should use Google Analytics to measure activity on their website

3. They should submit their songs to real industry opportunities, song contests and gigs

c. Great American Song Contest
d. International Songwriting Competition

4. They should distribute their music to all digital retail outlets

What is happening to the music industry?

In short, the traditional music industry has been beaten, battered and completely transformed by a perfect storm of new technologies. It actually started with the introduction of the CD back in 1982. Music was digitized and encoded on the CDs which we all bought to replace and enhance our vinyl collections. Then, along came the MP3 which enabled us to compress those CD song files down to manageable sizes and file sharing began. The next nail in the coffin of the traditional music industry was the emergence of MP3 players led by the iPod and digital retail led by iTunes. Once people became used to that, who wanted to carry around a CD case? Finally, the plummeting cost and decreasing technical knowledge required to make a decent sounding recording sounded the death knell for the major music labels, the backbone of the traditional music industry.

The music labels were society's music filters. They were responsible for finding the best talent, nurturing it, promoting it and distributing it all over the world. But the labels were also incredibly inefficient. For each act they successfully promoted and on which they turned a profit, there were dozens, even hundreds of failed acts and artists in whom the labels had invested and had lost money. Few industries would have been able to operate with such numbers but the music industry had thrived under this system; mostly due to the large amounts of cash that were made with every success. With new technologies affecting almost every aspect of the ecosystem (from song creation to mass distribution) the labels could do little to prevent the demise of their business. Seeing opportunity before them, entrepreneurs emerged with ideas about how the whole industry could be run more efficiently.

Today, music is increasingly sold as digital files that you download to your computer and then put on your mobile device such as your iPod. Other services are increasingly enabling you to stream music on demand. Under that arrangement, you never actually own any music. You simply have access to all of it all the time. Physical music retail stores are going out of business and soon won't exist as stand-alone shops.

Anyone can record and upload a song.

On the music creation side of the value chain, the cost of recording and producing a song has fallen through the floor. What used to cost tens of thousands of dollars and had to be done in a professional recording studio can now be done in a bedroom on a laptop computer. This is a great development that enables creative talent to emerge even in the absence of musical ability or even any musical knowledge. On the other hand, it has caused a veritable avalanche of new music to pour onto the web -- much of it of dubious quality. Even the largest physical music stores couldn't carry much more than 10,000 titles. That's nothing compared to what's now available at the click of a mouse. MySpace alone is said to host over 10 million acts. Other sites that cater to artists have hundreds of thousands of bands signed up to their services.

It is a jungle out there! How can the fans find the needles in the haystack they want to hear? How can the artists locate their future fans? It's the fundamental problem the labels were solving but now they can't do it effectively. There's too much music for them to even try to filter effectively and nobody wants to buy their CDs anyway, so how can that work even be funded? The sale of digital files isn't even coming close to compensating for the loss of revenue on the sale of physical goods so now there's much less money to compensate for the labels' inherent inefficiencies. In fact, most insiders believe recorded music will cease to be paid for by the end consumer. It will instead either be free (built into the cost of marketing other products) or built into the cost of other services you pay for such as your Internet and cable TV bill or your mobile phone service. It will feel free and the actual revenue generated from the distribution of recorded music will be a fragment of what it has been historically. So, where does that leave us?

Fortunately, it's all going to be OK. There are dozens of emerging companies that are taking on these challenges and there are some really good ideas. It's interesting to see the variety of approaches. Most agree that the currency of exchange for recorded music will be the attention of the fans instead of their money. If an artist can get attention they will be able to sell tickets to their shows, license songs to soundtracks and get money for endorsing products. The labels held the key to getting access to big opportunities but now the artists and their managers have to find other avenues.

In spite of the reduced barriers to music creation and access to easily have your song distributed to all of the digital outlets (see services such as TuneCore or The Orchard) it still almost always requires mass exposure in order for a song to really take hold and begin to earn some money. That means that once a song is created, it still requires enormous effort, time and resources to "push" and promote that song within the industry. Songs must still come to the attention of someone who has an opportunity. The gatekeepers, such as music supervisors in Hollywood, ad agencies, program directors and video game designers remain and will continue to remain in place playing a valuable role.

So, real change will come by leveling the playing field and by giving individual artists equal access to mass-exposure opportunities. This is the challenge we're trying to solve with our new Music Xray service. (Pardon the plug but I can't describe the solutions to the industry's toughest challenges without describing our own solution since it represents our best thinking and thus my opinion).

Think of Music Xray as a kind of YouTube for songs in that each Music Xray represents one song. Each Music Xray get s a unique URL (just like a YouTube video) and each Music Xray can be embedded elsewhere around the web (again, just like a YouTube video). But that's where the comparison with YouTube ends because a Music Xray is more than just an embeddable song player. Each Music Xray comes with a stack of modules that open and close (see here) and each module contains specific information about the song, such as its lyrics, how many times it is mentioned on Twitter, in blogs, how many times it is traded on peer to peer networks, what it's market potential is, what kind of license under which the song is available, what other songs it sounds like, among much other information. In addition to providing all of this information to the song owner (and anyone else they want to share it with), having so much information on each song allows us to provide a free filtering engine to the entire song buying music industry.

Imagine you're an advertising executive and you want to license a song for your next ad campaign. You want something that sounds like "Brown Sugar" by Rolling Stones, which has 130 beats per minute, has the words "Russian roulette" in the lyrics, that has at least a 50% chance of becoming successful in a particular market, that already has a growing number of fans and an available license. The filtering system at Music Xray will soon provide that level of detail and that level of filtering ability. It will be a revolution in how that part of the business operates.

The important thing for artists is to have their music in databases of this sort. The one at Music Xray is particularly attractive because it will be open to anyone in the industry who wants to leverage Music Xray's search capabilities. For a song owner, having their song in the Music Xray database will make it discoverable by anyone and reduces the work artists must do to promote their music within the industry once they've recorded it. It also reduces the work that music supervisors have to do when filtering hundreds of songs for each opportunity.

How will music consumption work?

From the music fan's perspective, music recommendation engines will become a ubiquitous part of our lives, and not just for music and entertainment products but for many consumer goods and services. You've seen the ads for Angie's List which compiles and features customer reviews of household and professional services. Amazon has been recommending books and other products for years based on what others with consumption habits similar to yours have purchased. This is just the beginning of where recommendations and "relevancy filtering" is going.

The best recommendation systems will be very sophisticated. They will expose you to enough of the "familiar" for you to feel like the system "gets" you and understands your tastes. They will expose you to enough of the "new" for you to feel like you are growing and evolving in your own unique direction. They will also keep you sufficiently in tune with your peers and with those who are like you for you to feel like you belong to a larger collective. They will know the difference between you at age 25 and you at age 45 and they will know which products you buy for yourself and which you purchase as gifts for others -- an important distinction for companies when making future recommendations.

There are a number of problems for the music industry to sort out but things are taking shape. One thing for certain is that the fans will not suffer. There is now and there will continue to be more music available than ever before and it will become easier to find and enjoy. It will cost less and more artists will earn a living making it.

Beatles' Catalog Re-Mastered, Digital Talks Continue

The Beatles' catalog has been digitally re-mastered for the first time for worldwide CD release on Sept. 9, according to a joint statement from Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music. But there has still been no announcement about the Beatles' music becoming available to purchase via download stores, despite constant speculation about a digital licensing agreement for the legendary British band's repertoire.

"Discussions regarding the digital distribution of the catalog will continue," according to the statement.

The 12 Beatles albums and the "Magical Mystery Tour" soundtrack (originally released as an EP in the U.K.) will be re-issued to coincide with the release of "The Beatles: Rock Band" video game. Each of the CDs includes expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos, and for a limited period each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.

Two new Beatles boxed CD collections will also be released on Sept. 9.

The albums have been re-mastered at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London over a four-year period, utilizing state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, "carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analog recordings," according to the statement.

It will be the first time that the first four Beatles albums will be available in stereo in their entirety on CD.

The "Past Masters Vol. I" and "Past Masters Vol. II" compilations have also been combined as one CD title.

All 14 Beatles titles, along with a DVD collection of the documentaries, will also be available in a stereo box set.

The documentaries contain archive footage, rare photographs and never-before-heard studio conversations from the Beatles.

A second boxed set, "The Beatles in Mono," gathers together all of the Beatles recordings that were mixed for a mono release. It will contain 10 of the albums with their original mono mixes, plus two further discs of mono masters, featuring a similar track listing to the "Past Masters" compilation.

It's been a long time since I've updated the blog and I know I'm overdue for a SXSW overview. Things have been crazy busy but I wanted to take the time for a quick "best-of"!

During SXSW, I saw so many great bands and met so many amazing people, it would be tough to do a full summary but the one show that really stands out in my mind is Angus & Julia Stone. After catching the awesome M. Ward and Anni Rossi show at Central Presbyterian Church, we met some people who suggested we check out Angus & Julia Stone afterward. With nothing definite on the schedule, we decided to take a chance and it ended up being the best surprise of the week!

The Australian brother/sister duo create beautiful music along the lines of Damien Rice when he's collaborating with Lisa Hannigan. They alternate lead vocals with Julia singing the majority of the songs, as well as playing multiple instruments, sometimes at the same time. The first song they played made me cry and I haven't been able to find it since but I'm still on the mission.

The next show worth noting was another pleasant and last-minute surprise. Leonard Cohen played two shows at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin last week. A couple friends of mine ended up scalping some tickets Wednesday and told me it was unmissable so I walked over and did the same Thursday night. It was one of the top two shows I've ever seen. The entire band was stellar and the back-up singers, the Webb Sisters, had the voices of angels - I'm sure we'll all be hearing more about them in the future. The band played for three hours with four encores and performed classics like Hallelujah as well as deeper cuts, all amazing. If you have the chance to check him out in a city near you, DO IT!

Design Within Reach/ Everloving Records SXSW Party

Please join us for a day of music and design as the DWR Austin Studio hosts LA-based record label Everloving (www.everloving.com).

Sample the sounds of Akron/Family, a trio that often expands to include five, six, seven or more musicians who share a desire to obliterate the line between audience/consumer and performer/musician. Next up will be legendary anti-folk band Herman Dune, a French duo comprised of David-Ivar Herman Dune and Neman Herman Dune. Based in Paris, they’ve recorded a dozen Peel Sessions on the BBC and have already shared the stage with Arcade Fire, Kimya Dawson, Of Montreal, Jeffrey Lewis and The Kooks.

Also, we are thrilled to show Grammy-nominated, Tokyo-based CORNELIUS’ Sensurround + B Sides, the long-anticipated visual companion to 2007’s Sensuous. The DVD features a 5.1 surround sound audio mix of each song from the critically acclaimed album, and places a renewed focus on the atmospherics of his disciplined sonic layers; bursts of electronic pulse-waves, wood-grain acoustics, minimalist interludes and raw guitar freak-outs.
